Whitechapel was formed in February in 2006 by Phil Bozeman, Brandon Cagle, and Ben Savage. Shortly after the idea of the band was formed the remaining members Alex Wade, Gabe Crisp, and Derek Martin were added to the line up, and recorded their first demos in March of that year. They named themselves after the English city of Whitechapel, the location of the Jack the Ripper murders. In 2007 the band signed to Siege of Amida Records in the U.K. and Candlelight Records in North America, who jointly released their debut full-length, The Somatic Defilement, in June of that year. In October 2007, the group signed to Metal Blade, and announced plans to release a new album in 2008. In January 2008, the group toured with Darkest Hour, Cephalic Carnage, and Emmure. The group is touring with The Black Dahlia Murder, Cryptopsy, Kataklysm, and Vader in summer 2008 on the Summer Slaughter Tour.
