Wednesday, March 31st

Join us March 31 for Tennessee Shines, presented by Red Kap and Downtown Knoxville, hosted by Jim Lauderdale and the Red Kap Band! March's guests are Mindy Smith, Cadillac Sky, The Black Lillies and Brand New Strings! Singer-songwriter Mindy Smith spent a short time in Knoxville early in her career, but it made a lasting impression on those who got goosebumps hearing her bell of a voice. Smith moved to Nashville and made a huge splash at open-mic and in-the-round nights, followed by her major label debut One Moment More, which featured the hit single “Come to Jesus.” A vocalist of rare talent and an observant songwriter, Smith's newest release is Stupid Love. Is Cadillac Sky bluegrass, newgrass, folk or…? No matter: what we know is that they sound so good. Their new album Letters in the Deep, due out in June and produced by Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys, leaps genres and positions the band as Your Favorite String Band. You heard it hear first. Since we last hosted The Black Lillies in June 2009, the Knox-area band has been around the country, spreading the seeds of their spooky, Southern Gothic folk-rock. Their eagerly awaited new CD will be released in March. Don't call it a comeback; the members of Brand New Strings have been here for years. Some of East Tennessee’s favorite bluegrass players—Randall Massengill, Tim Tipton, Mike Ramsey, Stuart Wyrick and Matt Leadbetter—got together, started a band and put out a CD. No Strings Attached exhibits the band's hard-drivin' approach to originals and traditional tunes.
