The second edition of the groundbreaking BIG EARS Festival is scheduled for March 26-27-28, 2010 in Knoxville, TN.
The legendary American composer Terry Riley will be Artist in Residence for the weekend, with a Retrospective Concert Series of his works performed throughout the festival weekend including a performance of his groundbreaking work, In C.
TERRY RILEY is one of the most influential musicians and composers of the past century, recently selected by the London Times as one of the “1000 Makers of the 20th Century.” In 1964, Riley changed the course of music history with his revolutionary composition In C, launching what is now known as the Minimalist movement. Subsequent early works such as A Rainbow in Curved Air and Poppy Nogood, with their kaleidoscopic, psychedelic atmospheres and kinetic rhythms, sent waves across the musical worlds of the 1960s, strongly influencing numerous rock bands such as the Who and Pink Floyd as well as such prominent composers/performers as Philip Glass, Steve Reich and John Adams. His influence continues to resonate today as strongly as ever.
RILEY will perform several concerts during the weekend, in a variety of configurations and settings. In addition, there will be performances of several string quartets by the acclaimed Calder String Quartet. BIG EARS also plans to host a performance of In C with many of the other musicians performing at this years’ festival.
The full BIG EARS 2010 line up will be announced and tickets will be available in early December.
